Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has announced a province-wide public holiday for 1st Muharram, with the final implementation dependent on the official sighting of the Islamic New Year moon.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has announced a public holiday across the province on the 1st of Muharram-ul-Haram, though the decision will take effect only if the moon marking the beginning of the new Islamic year is officially sighted.
According to a notification issued by the provincial Administration Department, all government offices and educational institutions will remain closed on 1st Muharram. Authorities clarified that the holiday is conditional upon the confirmation of the Muharram moon sighting.
Meanwhile, the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee is scheduled to meet today to determine the beginning of Muharram and the new Islamic year. The session will be chaired by committee chairman Maulana Syed Muhammad Abdul Khabir Azad, with participation from committee members as well as experts from the Meteorological Department, SUPARCO, and the Ministry of Science and Technology.
Alongside the central meeting, zonal moon-sighting committees in major cities and the federal capital will also convene to collect and review moon-sighting reports from across the country.
Following an assessment of testimonies and reports received from regional committees, the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will issue the final and official announcement regarding the sighting of the Muharram moon and the commencement of the new Islamic year.
