ISLAMABAD: Thousands of dead fish have been discovered in Rawal Dam, prompting environmental concerns and an official investigation into the cause of the mass fish deaths. The incident has been reported along the dam’s shoreline near Bani Gala and Dhokri Chowk, where decomposing fish have created a strong foul odor, affecting nearby residents.
Local residents said dead fish have continued to wash ashore over the past several days, raising fears about the condition of the reservoir. They also recalled a similar incident last year, when hundreds of fish reportedly died due to suspected chemical contamination. Residents claim no effective action was taken against those responsible, allowing environmental risks to persist.
Environmental experts have warned that if pollution or toxic substances are responsible, immediate scientific testing of the water is essential. They cautioned that delayed action could threaten not only aquatic life but also public health and the surrounding ecosystem.
Meanwhile, officials from the district administration’s Fisheries Department said the preliminary assessment suggests the fish deaths may have been caused by low water levels in the reservoir combined with the recent spell of extreme heat. However, they stressed that laboratory testing and further investigations are underway, and the exact cause has not yet been confirmed.
