Jamaat-e-Islami urges peaceful nationwide demonstrations, arguing that petroleum levies and taxes are placing an unfair financial burden on the public.
ISLAMABAD: Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan has announced a nationwide protest on August 7 against the petroleum levy and taxes imposed on fuel, calling them an unnecessary financial burden on citizens already struggling with rising living costs.
Speaking to the media in Karachi, Jamaat-e-Islami chief Hafiz Naeem Ur Rehman said the party strongly opposes the petroleum levy, arguing that it has increased the cost of living for ordinary Pakistanis. He urged young people to participate in peaceful demonstrations across the country and encouraged motorcycle riders to park their bikes as a symbolic form of protest.
The Jamaat-e-Islami leader emphasized that the demonstrations would remain peaceful and organized. He added that Karachi Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Muneem Zafar would formally announce the party’s protest campaign in the city ahead of the nationwide demonstrations.
During his media interaction, Hafiz Naeem Ur Rehman also criticized the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), alleging that despite publicly opposing each other, the two parties are effectively political allies. He claimed they have failed to play a serious role in addressing the public’s economic concerns.
The announcement comes at a time when fuel prices and taxation remain major public concerns in Pakistan, with political parties increasingly focusing on inflation and the rising cost of essential commodities. The August 7 protest is expected to highlight public dissatisfaction over fuel-related taxes and their impact on household budgets.
