BERLIN: One person was killed and 16 others were injured after a car crashed into a crowd during an LGBTQ Pride parade in Berlin late Saturday, prompting police to cancel the event and launch a large-scale search for the suspected driver.
According to Reuters, the incident occurred at around 10 p.m. local time near Tiergarten Park, a central section of the parade route. Witnesses reported that a white car struck multiple pedestrians before crashing into a tree.
Berlin police said at least 16 people were injured, with several in critical condition and fighting for their lives. Emergency responders rushed to the scene to treat victims, while authorities instructed parade participants to leave the area immediately for safety reasons.
The vehicle was found abandoned at the scene, triggering an extensive police operation. Officers sealed off the area between Potsdamer Platz and the southern entrance of the Tiergarten Tunnel as forensic teams gathered evidence and investigators examined the crash site.
On Sunday, police confirmed they had identified a suspect but said no arrest had yet been made. Police spokesperson Florian Nath stated that the individual was already known to law enforcement and was believed to have links to some Islamist circles in Berlin.
Authorities stressed that the investigation remains in its early stages and cautioned against drawing conclusions about the motive. Police said the search for the suspect is ongoing and additional information will be released as the investigation progresses.
