Five-match Test series against Oman’s senior national team aims to strengthen Pakistan’s next generation of hockey talent through valuable international exposure.
Pakistan’s Under-21 hockey team departed for Muscat on Monday to compete in a five-match Test series against Oman’s senior national team, a tour designed to provide the country’s emerging players with valuable international experience ahead of future senior-level competitions.
The touring squad is accompanied by head coach and Olympian Ayaz Mahmood, coach and Olympian Sameer Hussain, and coach Azfar Yaqoob. The series is expected to play a significant role in preparing young players for the physical and tactical demands of international hockey.
The opening Test will be played on July 29, followed by matches on July 31, August 1, August 2, and August 4. Competing against an experienced senior Oman side will allow Pakistan’s junior players to test their skills under pressure while adapting to the intensity of international competition.
Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) President Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani expressed confidence in the squad before its departure, saying the tour would help young players gain confidence and develop through meaningful exposure against foreign opposition.
The PHF believes regular international fixtures are essential for identifying promising talent and preparing the country’s future hockey stars for senior national responsibilities. The extended five-match format will also enable players to learn from each game, make tactical adjustments, and demonstrate consistency throughout the series.
Beyond match results, the Oman tour offers Pakistan’s coaching staff an opportunity to assess player development, evaluate performance in competitive conditions, and identify athletes capable of progressing to the senior national team.
As Pakistan continues its efforts to rebuild its hockey program, the Oman series represents an important investment in the next generation of players, offering valuable experience that could shape the future of the national team.
