Regional diplomatic efforts have gained momentum as Qatar, Pakistan and Oman work to revive dialogue between Washington and Tehran, despite ongoing proxy attacks and disruptions to global shipping routes.
Regional mediation efforts led by Qatar and Pakistan have made notable progress in easing tensions between the United States and Iran after both sides observed a three-day pause in direct military strikes.
The temporary reduction in hostilities follows nearly two weeks of intense military exchanges that escalated after Iranian actions in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy shipping routes. Although direct attacks between Washington and Tehran have stopped for now, instability continues across the region through proxy groups.
Iran-backed militias and Houthi forces have continued launching drone attacks targeting Saudi Arabian petroleum facilities, while regional air defenses intercepted additional drones over Jordan and Iraq. These incidents underscore that the broader security situation in the Middle East remains fragile despite the pause in direct confrontation.
Diplomatic talks involving Qatar, Pakistan and Oman are focused on creating a maritime management mechanism for the Strait of Hormuz. The proposed framework is intended to help restore confidence, reduce the risk of military escalation, and support an interim ceasefire arrangement.
However, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said there are currently no direct negotiations between Iran and the United States. He also maintained that the Strait of Hormuz remains closed, while US naval restrictions on Iran continue.
The prolonged disruption has significantly affected international shipping through both the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, raising concerns over global energy supplies and international trade.
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to meet US President Donald Trump in Washington to discuss the broader regional conflict. At the same time, Iranian officials have condemned a reported Ukrainian strike on an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea, adding another layer of tension to an already volatile regional landscape.
