Federal minister says dialogue is the only way forward, distances the government from controversial remarks, and urges Rawalakot protesters to engage in peaceful negotiations.
ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan Aamir Muqam has invited the leadership of the ongoing Rawalakot sit-in to hold negotiations, urging protesters to resolve their concerns through dialogue as political tensions continue in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
Speaking in a televised interview, Muqam reaffirmed that the people of Rawalakot have always been an integral part of Kashmir’s identity. He praised the sacrifices made by the residents of Poonch and other areas of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, saying their contributions to Pakistan deserve recognition and respect.
The minister’s remarks came after controversial comments attributed to Defence Minister Khawaja Asif triggered criticism from political leaders and residents across the region. Responding to the controversy, Muqam clarified that the remarks represented Khawaja Asif’s personal opinion and did not reflect the official stance of the federal government or the ruling party.
He stressed that the government’s policy remains unchanged and reiterated its commitment to respecting the people of Rawalakot and addressing their concerns through peaceful means.
Referring to the ongoing protest, Muqam rejected attempts to portray all demonstrators as extremists. He said most participants are patriotic Pakistanis with legitimate grievances and appealed to them to distance themselves from individuals pursuing disruptive agendas.
“I do not consider everyone at the sit-in to be terrorists,” the minister said, adding that constructive dialogue remains the most effective way to restore stability and find lasting solutions.
The federal minister emphasized that negotiations are the preferred path forward and urged protest leaders to engage with the government to prevent further escalation. He said meaningful discussions could help address public concerns while maintaining peace in the region.
