England fast bowler John Turner has retired from professional cricket at 25 after a prolonged battle with injuries kept him out of the game for more than a year.
England fast bowler John Turner has announced his retirement from professional cricket at just 25, bringing an unexpectedly early end to a career that once appeared to have significant international promise.
Turner, who played two ODIs and two T20Is for England in 2024, made the decision after a prolonged battle with injuries kept him away from professional cricket since June last year.
The Hampshire seamer suffered a stress fracture in his back and spent more than a year on the sidelines. Despite having two years remaining on his Hampshire contract and previously holding an England and Wales Cricket Board development contract, Turner concluded that it was time to begin a new chapter.
Turner said the repeated injuries had forced him to seriously consider his future both within cricket and beyond the sport.
“Playing professional and international cricket was always my dream,” Turner said, reflecting on his journey. Representing Hampshire and England, he added, had fulfilled ambitions he had held since childhood.
The decision to retire was not an easy one. Turner described it as one of the toughest choices of his life but said he believed the timing was right to pursue a different challenge.
Turner made his first-class debut for Hampshire in 2021 and spent five years with the county. Looking back, he described his time at Hampshire as the best period of his life and expressed gratitude to the club’s management, coaches, teammates and supporters for their continued support.
His international breakthrough came at the age of 23, when he earned his first opportunity with England. However, persistent fitness problems ultimately prevented him from building on that early promise.
