Pakistan’s leadership is in Saudi Arabia for high-level talks that could deepen defence, investment and regional security cooperation with Riyadh and Ankara.
MAKKAH: Pakistan’s top civilian and military leadership performed Umrah in Saudi Arabia on Friday as Islamabad prepared for potentially significant diplomatic engagements involving Saudi Arabia and Türkiye.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif and Information Minister Attaullah Tarar were among the Pakistani delegation visiting the Kingdom.
The delegation was also granted a special visit inside the Holy Kaaba before performing Umrah, an honour that added significance to the official visit. After completing the pilgrimage, the Pakistani leaders offered prayers for the country’s peace, prosperity, national security and unity, as well as peace across the Muslim world and beyond.
The visit comes amid expectations of intensified consultations between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye. Diplomatic sources said Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is also expected in Saudi Arabia, raising the possibility of a high-level trilateral engagement involving the three countries.
If held, the meeting could provide an opportunity to discuss a broader strategic framework covering defence cooperation, military coordination and defence-industrial partnerships. Regional security and wider strategic collaboration are also expected to feature prominently in discussions.
For Pakistan, closer coordination with Riyadh and Ankara could strengthen its diplomatic and strategic position while creating opportunities for cooperation in defence, investment and economic development.
Saudi Arabia has remained an important partner for Pakistan, while Türkiye has maintained close political and defence ties with Islamabad. Greater coordination among the three countries could therefore have implications beyond bilateral relations, particularly on regional security and economic cooperation.
