Pakistan extends condolences and solidarity to Colombia as rescue teams search for survivors following a devastating 7.4-magnitude earthquake.
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of more than 111 lives in Colombia after a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck the western part of the country.
The earthquake hit on Monday, with its epicenter reported near San José del Palmar in the Chocó region. The strong tremor caused extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure, prompting large-scale rescue operations as emergency workers searched collapsed structures for survivors.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif conveyed heartfelt condolences to Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella, the people of Colombia and the families who lost loved ones. He said Pakistan stood with Colombia during the difficult period and expressed solidarity with those affected by the disaster.
Sharif also extended sympathy to people injured or displaced by the earthquake, while praising rescue workers and volunteers involved in emergency operations.
Several western cities, including Pereira, Cali, Quibdó and Manizales, reported significant damage. Hospitals faced increased pressure as injured residents were brought in for treatment, while rescue teams continued clearing debris from damaged buildings.
Authorities also reported damage to infrastructure and airports, while aftershocks increased anxiety among residents. Colombia’s government declared an emergency to accelerate relief and rescue efforts.
The disaster has drawn international concern as Colombia works to respond to the widespread destruction. Rescue teams remain focused on locating survivors, treating the injured and providing support to affected communities.
