Islamabad Police have arrested the alleged principal suspect and registered an FIR after journalist Ehtasham Ali Abbasi reported being assaulted at multiple locations in the capital.
ISLAMABAD: Islamabad Police have arrested the alleged main suspect and registered a First Information Report (FIR) following reported assaults on journalist Ehtasham Ali Abbasi in the federal capital.
According to police officials, the arrest followed Abbasi’s public statement outside Aabpara Police Station, where he described the incidents and sought legal action. Police have also launched raids at several locations to apprehend other individuals allegedly involved in the attacks.
Abbasi said the first incident took place outside the Federal Investigation Agency’s Islamabad Zonal Office in Melody, where he had gone for official work. He alleged that a man identified as Munawwar, accompanied by several others, assaulted him and caused injuries.
The journalist said he subsequently approached police and was taken to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) for a medical examination. According to his account, the same group allegedly confronted and assaulted him again at the hospital despite the presence of police personnel.
Abbasi said police officers responded promptly and assured him that the matter would be dealt with according to law and that the case would be decided on merit. He also appreciated the role of the SP City, Islamabad Inspector General of Police and other officers whom he said supported him during the incident and subsequent proceedings.
Police officials confirmed that the principal suspect had been taken into custody and that an FIR was registered at Aabpara Police Station. Senior officers are reportedly monitoring the investigation, while police teams are conducting further raids to locate the remaining suspects.
In his statement, Abbasi alleged that the accused was a property dealer and claimed that he had a criminal record. He also rejected any impression that the incident involved a dispute between journalists or lawyers, saying the matter would now be pursued through legal channels.
The journalist thanked Islamabad Police for registering the FIR and making an arrest, adding that he would pursue the remaining proceedings before the courts in accordance with the law.
The incident has renewed concerns over the safety of journalists working in the federal capital. Media circles have called for effective protection of journalists and a transparent investigation into attacks against media professionals.
