Pakistan Meteorological Department forecasts heavy to very heavy rain across several upper regions, warning of urban flooding, flash floods and landslides in vulnerable areas.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued a fresh weather alert, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in several parts of the country and a risk of urban flooding in Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
According to the department, Islamabad, Rawalpindi and adjoining areas could receive heavy rain over the next 12 to 36 hours. Rain, strong winds and thunderstorms are expected to continue across upper parts of the country, with isolated areas potentially receiving torrential rainfall.
The department warned that heavy rain could cause urban flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Jhelum, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Sialkot and Narowal also face a risk of urban flooding.
Heavy rainfall in Murree, the Galiyat region, Potohar and other hilly areas could trigger rising water levels in local streams and increase the risk of landslides.
The current weather system is being attributed to a wave of westerly winds affecting upper areas, along with moisture-laden winds from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal.
Rawalpindi’s administration has placed relevant departments on high alert. WASA, Rescue 1122, district administration, police and other agencies have been directed to remain in the field and ensure effective drainage arrangements.
Rain and thunderstorms are also expected in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Gilgit-Baltistan and northern Balochistan over the next 24 hours.
