PTA has advised WhatsApp users to link their accounts to active mobile numbers and use the Change Number feature after switching SIMs.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has decided to block WhatsApp accounts linked to inactive, canceled or no-longer-used SIMs, citing concerns over their potential misuse for fraud and other unlawful activities.
According to the authority, WhatsApp accounts associated with mobile numbers that are no longer actively used can remain vulnerable even after the corresponding SIM becomes inactive. PTA said some such accounts have been exploited for fraudulent and illegal activities, prompting the regulator to strengthen measures aimed at digital security.
The authority has advised WhatsApp users to ensure their accounts remain linked to active and currently used mobile numbers.
Users Urged to Update WhatsApp Numbers
PTA has particularly advised users who have changed their mobile numbers to use WhatsApp’s Change Number feature without delay. The feature allows users to transfer their account information to a new number and helps reduce the risk of unauthorized use of an account linked to an old number.
The regulator has also urged subscribers to check the current status of their SIMs and take appropriate action if a number has become inactive, has been canceled or is no longer being used.
PTA said action against WhatsApp accounts associated with inactive SIMs could begin at any time.
The move forms part of broader efforts to reduce fraud, strengthen digital security and prevent the misuse of mobile numbers that are no longer under the active control of their original users.
Users who have switched mobile numbers are therefore advised to update their WhatsApp accounts promptly rather than continuing to use an account registered to an old or inactive number.
PTA said keeping WhatsApp accounts connected to active mobile numbers can help users maintain control of their accounts and reduce the risk of unauthorized access or misuse of their digital identities.
