PTA Issues Warning to Social Media Users Over Illegal and Misleading Content

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.

It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Islamabad: (Ayesha Naz)The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a stern warning to all social media users, urging them to refrain from creating, sharing, or promoting any form of illegal, hateful, defamatory, or misleading content on digital platforms.

According to the PTA, any such content must be removed immediately. The authority also advised users to avoid becoming part of narratives, campaigns, or online movements that could harm national integrity or undermine the dignity and reputation of state institutions or individuals.

The PTA emphasized that spreading false information intentionally, particularly content that damages a person’s reputation or violates their privacy, is a punishable offense under Section 20 of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016. The authority reiterated that the law applies equally to all individuals without exception.

In its statement, the PTA highlighted that responsible digital behavior is a collective national responsibility. It stressed that social media should be used in a constructive and lawful manner rather than as a tool for misinformation, hatred, or character assassination.

The authority further warned that strict legal action will be taken against those found violating cyber laws. The PTA urged citizens to remain vigilant, verify information before sharing, and contribute positively to a safe and responsible digital environment in the country.
