Pakistan Railways Police has been directed to check passenger tickets on trains and take action against those travelling without valid tickets.
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Railways Police has been assigned responsibility for checking passenger tickets on trains, marking a significant change in the department’s operational duties.
The development was reported on Sept. 20, 2026, with Jang and Dunya reporting that instructions issued by the Inspector General of Pakistan Railways Police require officers across the country to ensure ticket checking on trains.
According to the reports, railway police officials will identify passengers travelling without valid tickets and take action against them. The instructions apply to railway police divisions across the country, including Peshawar, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Multan, Sukkur, Karachi and Quetta.
Under the new arrangement, station house officers will conduct ticket-checking operations during their respective shifts. Dunya reported that SHOs in the first shift would check trains accompanied by a head constable, while officers assigned to the second shift would perform similar duties.
The railway police personnel assigned to checking duties have also been instructed to share their live location with the designated control room through WhatsApp. The instructions further require daily compliance reports to be submitted to senior railway police officials by 10 a.m.
The move comes as Pakistan Railways already relies on railway police to enforce railway laws, protect railway assets and help ensure the safety of passengers. The official Pakistan Railways Police website describes the force as a federal law enforcement agency responsible for enforcing railway laws, preventing crime within railway jurisdiction and providing secure journeys to passengers.
Pakistan Railways’ official passenger guidance also states that passengers travelling without a proper ticket can face action under the relevant railway law. The railway’s FAQ says a passenger travelling on a ticket reserved in another person’s name is treated as travelling without a proper ticket and can be dealt with under Section 113 of the Railway Act.
