Balochistan officials say the provincial government has introduced 18 laws, established 17 institutions and intensified security operations to combat terrorism.

QUETTA: The Balochistan government has spent more than Rs14 billion on counterterrorism efforts, introduced 18 laws and established 17 institutions and departments under its security plans, senior provincial officials said Tuesday.

The officials said more than 60,000 counterterrorism operations had been conducted across the province up to October, claiming that the operations had resulted in the deaths of more than 1,000 suspected terrorists.

The figures were shared at a joint news conference by Provincial Home Minister Ziaullah Langove, Chief Minister’s Adviser on Media and Political Affairs Shahid Rind, and Additional Chief Secretary Home Hamza Shafqaat.

According to the officials, the provincial government has been implementing the National Action Plan, the Counterterrorism Policy and the Provincial Action Plan to address ongoing security challenges and strengthen law enforcement.

They said the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) had killed 250 terrorists and arrested another 250 suspects during its operations. The figures presented at the briefing also highlighted the human cost of security-related violence, with police personnel, other law enforcement officers and civilians among those killed.

According to the officials, 101 police personnel and around 200 members of other law enforcement agencies had lost their lives in security-related incidents. The number of civilians killed in terrorist violence stood at 551.

Additional Chief Secretary Home Hamza Shafqaat said the provincial government had introduced several measures over the past two years to strengthen its counterterrorism framework and improve the capabilities of law enforcement agencies.

The officials also outlined efforts to improve security along key highways, including the Quetta-Rakhni, Quetta-Karachi and Quetta-Taftan routes. These roads are important for passenger travel, commercial activity and regional connectivity, making their security a priority for the provincial authorities.

The government’s reported spending, legislative measures and institutional changes form part of its broader efforts to address security threats across Balochistan. However, the figures presented at the news conference were attributed to provincial officials and were not independently verified in the information provided.

The officials expressed optimism that the security situation would improve over the next three to four months, pointing to ongoing operations and measures aimed at strengthening security arrangements.

Their assessment indicates that the provincial government expects its counterterrorism initiatives to produce further improvements in the coming months. The extent of that progress will depend on the security situation and the effectiveness of the measures being implemented.
