Iranian leaders tell Field Marshal Asim Munir that Washington must address Tehran’s demands and rebuild trust before efforts to resume negotiations can advance.
Pakistan has intensified diplomatic efforts to ease tensions between Iran and the United States, as Iranian leaders told Field Marshal Asim Munir that Washington must take concrete steps to restore Tehran’s trust before negotiations can resume.
During a visit to Tehran on Tuesday, Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Parliament Speaker Bagher Ghalibaf, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Mohsen Rezaei, identified in the supplied account as a representative of Iran’s supreme leader and secretary of the Supreme National Security Council. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also accompanied him.
The visit came amid international efforts to prevent a renewed outbreak of hostilities and revive diplomatic engagement between Tehran and Washington. Iranian officials indicated that Iran’s seven-point proposal could provide a basis for renewed negotiations if the United States agreed to Tehran’s conditions.
Iran Seeks US Action Before Negotiations Resume
The discussions included the possibility of reviving the understanding reached in Islamabad. However, no formal agreement or major breakthrough was announced following the meetings.
Iranian officials reportedly conveyed Tehran’s response to a US proposal to Field Marshal Munir. Tehran maintained that it would not make concessions under pressure and that Washington must take the first steps toward restoring confidence.
An Iranian source said Tehran had no new proposals to offer the United States and expected Washington to return to the Islamabad understanding. Iranian media described the response to the American proposal as clear, serious and explicit.
Parliament Speaker Bagher Ghalibaf told Field Marshal Munir that the United States could not regain Iran’s confidence without fulfilling seven conditions Tehran had presented during meetings in New York. He accused Washington of undermining trust through previous actions, including what Iran considers a violation of the Islamabad understanding.
Ghalibaf also warned that military pressure and threats would not change Iran’s strategic position. He said Washington needed to take the necessary steps to find a way out of the conflict.
Iran Rejects Concessions on Enriched Nuclear Material
Mohsen Rezaei rejected the possibility of Iran surrendering its enriched nuclear material, describing it as a national asset intended for domestic use. He stressed that negotiations could not advance without US action to address Tehran’s demands.
President Masoud Pezeshkian also reiterated Iran’s determination to defend its sovereignty. In a separate statement, he said the Iranian people could endure hardships but would not surrender their land.
Pakistan-Iran Border Disruption Also Discussed
The meetings also covered bilateral relations, particularly the temporary disruption of commercial traffic across the Pakistan-Iran border.
Iranian officials expressed concern over the closure, while Field Marshal Munir explained that it had resulted from technical reasons. He said the crossings had reopened on Tuesday.
The visit followed talks between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Iranian leaders a day earlier on the conflict and regional stability.
