The US Justice Department has removed a government lawyer from her assignment in Minnesota after she publicly criticised the immigration system and admitted failures to comply with court orders during a federal hearing, according to Reuters.
Julie Le a Department of Homeland Security attorney temporarily assigned to the US Attorney’s Office made the remarks during a tense hearing before US District Judge Jerry Blackwell in St. Paul. The session focused on the administration’s repeated non-compliance with judicial orders including directives to release detainees arrested under Operation Metro Surge a large-scale immigration enforcement initiative under the Trump administration.
Court transcripts show Le, appearing visibly fatigued telling the judge that she had stupidly volunteered to manage hundreds of immigration related lawsuits. The system sucks. This job sucks she said, acknowledging that Immigration and Customs Enforcement had failed to follow court orders both in the past and at present.
Le also criticised the Justice Department for inadequate training and staffing adding that the pressure had taken a severe personal toll. Judge Blackwell noted that much of the strain faced by the government was self inflicted due to its failure to comply with court rulings.
