The Supreme Court of Pakistan has disposed of three criminal petitions filed by Imran Khan declaring them ineffective after reviewing reports submitted by a court appointed assistant and assurances from the Attorney General of Pakistan.
A two-member bench headed by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi issued a detailed seven page order following the February 12 hearing. The petitions challenged interim procedural rulings made during criminal proceedings stemming from a complaint filed by the Election Commission of Pakistan. However the Court noted that the trial court had already concluded the case and delivered its final verdict on August 5, 2023.
The Court had earlier sought updated information on Khan’s detention conditions directing authorities at Central Jail Rawalpindi to submit a fresh report. Barrister Salman Safdar was appointed as Friend of the Court to personally assess the situation.
Both reports indicated satisfactory living conditions, food quality, security arrangements, and routine medical care. While Khan expressed overall satisfaction concerns were raised regarding his deteriorating eyesight. The Attorney General assured the Court that a specialist eye examination would be conducted promptly.
The Court also recorded assurances regarding regulated contact with Khan’s sons abroad and the provision of reading materials advising that any further grievances be pursued before the High Court where appeals remain pending.
