Discovery in Nashpa Block Signals Potential Boost to Domestic Energy Supply
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan received encouraging news for its energy sector after the Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) announced a fresh oil and gas discovery in the Nashpa Block, located in the Kohat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
According to company officials, initial testing at the exploratory well has yielded promising results, with the capacity to produce hundreds of barrels of crude oil per day alongside a substantial volume of natural gas. While further appraisal and development work is required, early indicators suggest the reserves may be commercially viable.
The discovery comes at a critical time for Pakistan, which has grappled with persistent energy shortages and heavy reliance on imported fuel. Rising global oil and gas prices have strained foreign exchange reserves, making domestic exploration increasingly vital for economic stability and energy security.
Engineers drilled deep underground formations believed to hold hydrocarbon deposits, confirming their presence after detailed testing. OGDCL, operating in partnership with stakeholders, plans to accelerate further exploration and potential production expansion in the region.
Energy analysts say increased domestic output could ease import pressures, stabilize long-term energy costs, create employment opportunities and strengthen investor confidence in Pakistan’s upstream energy sector.
