Pakistan captain emphasizes composure, focus, and mental strength as key factors ahead of cricket’s most intense rivalry
COLOMBO: Pakistan captain Babar Azam has stressed the importance of staying calm under pressure as his team prepares for a high-voltage showdown against arch-rivals India national cricket team in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Babar described the Pakistan-India rivalry as one of cricket’s most intense contests, drawing massive global attention and expectations. He said handling pressure with composure often determines success in matches of such magnitude.
“A Pakistan-India match is always high intensity. The whole world and the fans are involved, and expectations naturally rise,” Babar said, adding that players perform better when they stay relaxed and ignore outside noise. He noted younger players can become over-excited, but remaining tension-free helps maintain focus.
Both teams enter Sunday’s clash unbeaten in the tournament. Pakistan secured victories over the Netherlands and the United States, while India defeated the United States and Namibia to maintain their winning momentum.
Historically, India have dominated the T20 International rivalry, winning 13 of the 16 encounters, while Pakistan have recorded three victories. In T20 World Cup history, India hold a 6-1 edge, with one match ending without a result.
Despite India’s statistical advantage, Pakistan-India matches are known for unpredictability. Momentum swings, tight finishes, and decisive moments often outweigh historical numbers. Pakistan’s commanding 10-wicket win in Dubai during the 2021 T20 World Cup remains a reminder that composure and execution on the day can overturn years of statistics, making every encounter a true test of nerve and skill.
