Authorities in Lower Chitral have confirmed that an animal initially believed to be a snow leopard cub was in fact a leopard cat following swift intervention by the Snow Leopard Foundation Pakistan and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Wildlife Department.
On February 12 residents of Lower Chitral reported capturing what they suspected was a snow leopard cub in Broz village. Given the species conservation significance wildlife officials treated the report as urgent. Experts accompanied by members of the Village Conservation Committee immediately visited the site and conducted a physical examination determining the animal was a leopard cat.
The animal was transported to Chitral Veterinary Hospital for medical evaluation. Veterinarians reported no major injuries fractures, or internal trauma and administered precautionary treatment. Officials stated the leopard cat remains stable and under daily observation with plans for release once it is deemed fully fit.
Conservationists noted that leopard cats though smaller than snow leopards play a vital ecological role by controlling rodent populations. Experts also warned that habitat loss, hunting, and illegal trade threaten the species across Asia.
Dr Muhammad Ali Nawaz emphasized that timely reporting and rapid response are essential for effective wildlife protection.
