Civil Servants’ Early Retirement Restricted Under Punjab’s Updated Pension Rules

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.

It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Punjab enforces stricter early retirement rules for civil servants to ensure uniformity in pension benefits

LAHORE: The Punjab government has amended pension regulations for civil servants, tightening conditions for both voluntary and compulsory retirement, according to a notification issued by the provincial finance department.

Under the revised Punjab Civil Services Pension Rules, which take immediate effect under the Punjab Civil Servants Act, 1974, employees seeking voluntary retirement must fulfill two conditions: completion of at least 25 years of qualifying service and reaching 55 years of age. Previously, some civil servants could retire after 25 years of service even if under 55.

Now, whichever milestone 25 years of service or age 55 is achieved later will determine eligibility. For instance, an employee completing 25 years of service at age 52 must wait until turning 55 to retire voluntarily.

Compulsory retirement rules have also been clarified. Civil servants may be retired compulsorily after 20 years of service in certain circumstances, including disciplinary cases such as corruption. Pension calculations have been updated to reflect the new criteria, ensuring benefits are granted according to these revised rules.

These changes aim to streamline civil service retirement practices and ensure consistency in pension entitlements across the province.
