WEB DESK: India has been shaken due to a number of high-profile aviation accidents during the past year, which have claimed the lives of dozens of people, and sparked safety concerns.
On Thursday, a chartered airliner crashed in Baramati (near Maharashtra) and the Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar was among six persons who were killed. The plane had Pawar, a personal security officer, an aide, and two crew people. The cause of the crash is under investigation by the authorities. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde called Pawar a “dedicated public servant” whose loss is “irreparable.
Last November in Dubai, an India HAL Tejas fighter aircraft crashed in a demonstration at the Dubai Air Show. Unable to eject the pilot was killed and this led to a suspension of the airstunt and a formal investigation. Since 2016 the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has developed the native 4.5-generation fighter, which is currently in service in the Indian Air Force. The crash also led to the fall of the shares of HAL by more than 2.5 percent.
In June 2025, a Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner (Flight AI 171) carrying the London bound plane was involved in an accident near the Ahmedabad Airport, resulting in 290 passengers and crew members being killed and only one survived. The plane crashed in a residential and hospital area, further contributing to the casualty on the ground. The victims included 169 Indians, 53 British and a few children.
The government of India are still investigating these cases, and the aviation specialists insist on enhanced safety and the thorough inspections of both civil and military planes. The society is still on the alert, as the tragedies are highlighting the vulnerabilities of the domestic and international air travel.
