Emergency crews race to find survivors as authorities probe suspected gas leak that flattened part of a home in Gul Rana Colony
KARACHI: A suspected gas explosion early Sunday morning caused a partial collapse of a residential building in Gul Rana Colony, Soldier Bazaar, killing at least 13 people and injuring about 14 others, officials said.
The blast, believed to have been triggered by a gas leak inside the home, brought down the roof and portions of the structure in the densely populated area. Police and emergency responders from Rescue 1122 rushed to the scene with urban search and rescue units and heavy equipment. Teams are still pulling debris apart, and authorities warned the death toll could rise as efforts continue to locate survivors.
Witnesses described a powerful blast that shook nearby homes, followed by cries from trapped residents. Local volunteers joined first responders, but unstable debris made rescue work difficult.
The injured were taken to nearby hospitals, with several in serious condition. Families of those missing gathered at the site and medical facilities seeking news.
An investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the gas leak. Officials urged residents to report any suspected leaks immediately and stressed the importance of strict gas safety in older city areas with aging infrastructure.
