ISLAMABAD: The government is considering convening a joint in-camera session of parliament to discuss the evolving situation in the Middle East and Afghanistan. The development emerged following a high level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the Prime Minister’s House where parliamentary leaders and heads of political parties received a confidential security briefing.
Participants were taken into confidence regarding Pakistan’s diplomatic contacts with Middle Eastern leadership. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari emphasized the need for a balanced foreign policy approach during the discussion.
JUI F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman proposed that PTI and other opposition parties also be included in future briefings, stressing that parliament should be fully informed about the rapidly changing regional dynamics. Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gillani supported the proposal, while other participants noted that parliament has traditionally been consulted during major crises.
According to sources, the prime minister sought time from coalition partners to deliberate on calling the session. Meanwhile, PM’s adviser Rana Sanaullah stated that military leadership briefed participants on ongoing contacts with Iran, aiming to ease misunderstandings and prevent further escalation.
