In Shakai, residents and youth organizations have announced a protest movement over a decade-long delay in the construction of a key small dam project.
Residents and youth representatives in Shakai have expressed serious concern over the prolonged delay in the construction of the Shakai Small Dam, a project they say is vital for agricultural development and local economic stability.
According to local leaders, the project was initiated with allocated funds and was expected to significantly support water management and farming activities in the region. However, despite the passage of nearly ten years, construction work has not progressed, raising questions about administrative performance and contractor responsibility.
Members of the Shakai Youth Welfare Organization stated that they have been raising their voices for the completion of the dam for the past three years through meetings with officials, written appeals, and local jirgas. Despite repeated assurances, they claim no concrete action has been taken on the ground.
Frustrated by continued delays, youth representatives warned that patience has run out. They announced that if immediate work on the project is not initiated, they will expand their protest campaign in consultation with local elders.
The protesters also called on the Chief Minister of Sohail Afridi to take urgent notice of the matter, ensure transparent use of funds, and hold responsible contractors and officials accountable. They demanded that direct monitoring of the project be placed under the Chief Minister’s office.
The youth further warned that their protest strategy would escalate in phases, including local demonstrations and potentially a long march or sit-in outside the Chief Minister’s House in Peshawar if demands are not met.
