IAEA’s approval marks a key step in Pakistan’s journey toward low-carbon, sustainable electricity generation
ISLAMABAD: The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has unanimously approved the Safeguards Agreement with Pakistan for Unit 5 (C-5) of the Chashma Nuclear Power Plant, reaffirming global confidence in Pakistan’s commitment to peaceful nuclear energy.
C-5, a Pressurized Water Reactor with a planned capacity of 1,200 MW, is expected to come online by 2030. Once operational, it will contribute significantly to the national grid, providing low-carbon electricity, enhancing energy security, supporting climate objectives, and fostering sustainable economic growth.
Pakistan currently operates six nuclear power plants with a combined capacity of 3,530 MW, maintaining an average capacity factor exceeding 90 percent. Nuclear energy accounts for 18.3 percent of the country’s electricity mix and 34 percent of total low-carbon power, supported by over 100 reactor-years of safe, secure, and fully safeguarded operations.
The approval of the safeguards agreement for Chashma-5 represents a major milestone in Pakistan’s clean energy agenda and highlights the nation’s compliance with international nuclear safety and non-proliferation standards.
