Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has accused the United States,Israel and several European countries of exploiting Iran’s economic difficulties to incite unrest and weaken national unity. Speaking on the recent wave of protests Pezeshkian said foreign powers sought to tear the nation apart by provoking demonstrations and deepening social divisions.
The protests began in late December driven by soaring inflation rising living costs and worsening economic hardship.They continued for nearly two weeks before being forcefully suppressed by Iranian authorities.Human rights organizations reported heavy casualties. US based group HRANA said at least 6,563 people were killed including 6,170 protesters and 214 security personnel. Iranian officials offered lower figures with Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stating that 3,100 deaths occurred including 2,000 members of the security forces.
Pezeshkian claimed foreign actors provided resources, encouraged violence and drew ordinary citizens into unrest describing the protests as part of a broader effort to destabilize the country.
The United States has voiced support for demonstrators, with President Donald Trump warning of possible action if the crackdown continued. Iran has rejected US demands to limit its missile program calling it non negotiable. Araqchi said Iran remains open to dialogue but prepared to defend itself stressing that “regime change is a complete fantasy.
