Iranian and US delegations arrive in Islamabad for Pakistan-mediated peace talks amid rising regional tensions
The Iranian delegation has arrived in Islamabad ahead of high-level mediation talks between Iran and the United States, sources confirmed on Saturday. The visit comes as Pakistan hosts a sensitive round of diplomatic engagement aimed at easing regional tensions.
According to Iranian media outlet Press TV, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf is leading the delegation. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is also expected to participate in the discussions.
The delegation landed at Nur Khan Airbase, where Pakistani officials received them with formal protocol arrangements. Reports indicate that as the Iranian aircraft entered Pakistani airspace, it was escorted by Pakistani fighter jets in a ceremonial display highlighting the significance of the visit.
On the U.S. side, JD Vance is expected to lead the American delegation. He is reportedly accompanied by senior envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, according to statements attributed to the White House.
The meeting is being hosted in Pakistan as part of its diplomatic facilitation role in reducing tensions between Washington and Tehran. The involvement of key political and strategic figures from both sides suggests a high-stakes dialogue with potential implications for regional stability.
Officials have not confirmed whether representatives of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps will attend, a factor analysts say could influence the tone and authority of Iran’s negotiating position. The talks are expected to focus on de-escalation measures and broader regional security concerns.
