King Charles III and Queen Camilla are set to undertake a state visit to the United States in late April, Buckingham Palace announced on Tuesday. The visit is expected to be a major diplomatic event aimed at strengthening ties between the two nations amid strained political relations.
According to Buckingham Palace, the trip has been planned to mark the 250th anniversary of US independence and will include official engagements in Washington before the royal couple travels to Bermuda. The palace stated that the programme will highlight both historic ties and the modern partnership between the United Kingdom and the United States.
The visit comes at a sensitive time, as relations between UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and US President Donald Trump have been strained over disagreements related to the Iran conflict and wider foreign policy issues. Despite tensions, both sides have emphasized the importance of maintaining strong bilateral relations.
President Trump is expected to host a state banquet at the White House, expressing respect for the monarch and welcoming the visit. Analysts suggest the trip may serve as a diplomatic effort to ease tensions and reinforce the longstanding “special relationship” between the two allies.
The visit will be the first state trip by a British monarch to the US since 2007.
