Local government officials escalate protest over alleged neglect and stalled municipal system
Local government representatives across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have announced a sit-in protest starting February 13 outside the provincial assembly in Peshawar, according to a statement issued by the mayor’s office.
The announcement, supported by the Local Councils Association Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, said thousands of elected municipal representatives from various districts will participate in the demonstration. Participants have been instructed to reach Peshawar with bedding arrangements, signaling plans for a prolonged protest.
The statement alleged that the local government system in the province has remained largely dysfunctional for the past four years. Municipal officials claim the provincial government has treated local councils unfairly, prompting continuous protests over the last three years. Representatives decided to intensify their movement after a February 11 deadline set for addressing their demands expired without progress.
The decision was finalized during an emergency meeting chaired by Peshawar Mayor Haji Zubair Ali and association president Himayatullah Mayar. Other office-bearers also attended, pledging to organize what they described as a decisive protest outside the provincial legislature.
