Pakistan pays tribute to soldiers martyred in one of Siachen’s deadliest incidents.
Pakistan marked the 14th anniversary of the Gayari sector tragedy on April 7, remembering the 129 soldiers who lost their lives in one of the deadliest avalanches on the Siachen Glacier. The disaster struck in 2012, burying a Pakistan Army battalion headquarters under massive snow, highlighting the extreme dangers faced by troops in high-altitude conflict zones.
The avalanche hit without warning, engulfing the base entirely and trapping all personnel. Immediate rescue efforts were launched by the Pakistan Army’s Corps of Engineers, facing harsh terrain, freezing temperatures, and immense snow volumes. Despite the challenges, the army conducted one of its most complex recovery operations, continuing for weeks to recover those buried beneath the snow.
A memorial at the Siachen front now honors the martyrs, serving as a lasting tribute to their courage and dedication. The Gayari tragedy remains a defining moment in Pakistan’s military history, symbolizing both profound loss and the nation’s enduring respect for its heroes. Every year, the anniversary is observed with solemn reflection, reaffirming that the sacrifices of these brave soldiers will never be forgotten.
