The UK government is set to implement broadcast level oversight on major streaming platforms, including Netflix Disney and Amazon Prime Video.
Under the new regulations, these platforms must adhere to the same content standards and accessibility rules as traditional broadcasters. The British media regulator Ofcom will enforce the rules ensuring protection against harmful material and the provision of accessibility services such as subtitles.
The regulations apply to streaming services with over 500,000 UK-based users. Ofcom will have the authority to investigate violations or non compliance and take action against platforms. The rules also mandate accurate reporting of news content and aim to shield viewers from offensive material.
According to the government, two-thirds of UK households subscribe to at least one major streaming service, while around 85 percent of households use on-demand platforms compared to 67 percent watching traditional television. The move highlights the growing influence of streaming services and the government’s intent to ensure consistent standards across both traditional and digital media, protecting audiences while promoting responsible content delivery.
