Elon Musk Warns of Global Energy Crisis Within 30 Months Due to AI Surge
WEB DESK: (Click Pakistan) American billionaire and tech mogul Elon Musk has issued a stark warning about a looming global energy crisis driven by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI). Speaking on John Collison’s podcast “Checkered Pint,” Musk said if current trends continue, the world could face widespread energy shortages within 30 to 36 months.
Musk emphasized that AI systems’ growing electricity demand has surpassed the capacity of current power grids, potentially triggering massive blackouts that would disrupt digital services, communication networks, and critical economic sectors.
To address this, Musk proposed a bold solution: relocating a significant portion of computing power to space. His plan envisions launching one million small satellites into low Earth orbit, each powered by solar energy, allowing continuous processing without taxing Earth’s grids.
However, the idea has sparked intense debate among scientists. Experts have raised concerns over satellite congestion, potential collisions, and space debris. The European Space Agency (ESA) cautioned that strict international regulations would be essential to avoid creating hazardous near-Earth conditions.
According to the International Energy Agency, AI data centers’ electricity consumption is projected to reach 480 terawatt-hours by 2025, a 35% increase from last year, potentially doubling by 2028 without efficiency improvements. MIT expert Dr. Liandra Cho called Musk’s warning “credible,” urging investment in small nuclear plants and advanced solar technology.
