In a major enforcement drive ahead of Ramadan the Food Department Khyber Pakhtunkhwa launched a crackdown against overpricing in Peshawar resulting in the arrest and imprisonment of 22 butchers.
The operation was carried out on the directives of Secretary Food Shah Mahmood and Director Food Mohsin Iqbal. Rationing Controller Peshawar Tauseef Iqbal supervised the field teams conducting inspections across key commercial areas including Dalazak Road Zaryab Colony and Board Bazaar.
Officials stated that the action targeted traders and butchers found violating the officially notified price list. Authorities confirmed that individuals involved in profiteering were sent directly to jail signaling a strict stance against artificial price hikes.
Speaking on the occasion Tauseef Iqbal warned that any shopkeeper exceeding government-approved rates would face legal consequences including imprisonment. He emphasized that the department would continue regular inspections to ensure price stability during Ramadan.
The Food Department reiterated its commitment to protecting consumers from unfair market practices, particularly during the holy month when demand for essential commodities typically rises. Officials urged traders to comply with the official rate list to avoid penalties.
