ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Greece have agreed to strengthen legal migration by increasing work visas for Pakistani citizens, aiming to provide more opportunities for skilled workers while curbing illegal migration.
The announcement followed a high-level meeting in Italy between Pakistan’s Federal Interior Minister and Greece’s Minister of Immigration. The discussions focused on illegal migration, human trafficking, and ways to enhance bilateral cooperation in migration management.
Both countries agreed on joint measures to prevent illegal migration, including tighter monitoring and improved management of migration flows to protect vulnerable individuals from exploitation. They also committed to exchanging information and intelligence to combat cross-border human trafficking networks.
A central topic was the pending migration cooperation agreement, under negotiation for the past two years. Both ministers pledged to finalize the accord soon formalizing work visa procedures labor mobility and safeguards for migrant workers.
Minister Mohsin Naqvi emphasized that promoting legal migration reduces reliance on illegal channels and ensures safe employment abroad for citizens. The Greek Minister of Immigration praised Pakistan’s policies in controlling unauthorized departures and underlined the importance of ongoing collaboration to protect migrants’ rights.
Both sides agreed to maintain regular communication and coordination, monitoring visa programs to ensure fair treatment and prevent exploitation of workers.
