First round of Pakistan’s 5G auction sees high competition, paving way for advanced mobile services
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan concluded the first round of its 5G spectrum auction on Tuesday, marking a key step toward launching next-generation mobile services. Three telecom companies participated in the bidding for available frequency bands, signaling strong interest in the country’s digital future.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) reported that bids were received for two of six spectrum bands offered in the opening round. The 2600MHz band, with 190 megahertz of spectrum across 19 lots, attracted 30 bids, including 11 extra bids that exceeded available lots, prompting the PTA to set a new price for the band. In the 3500MHz band, 280 megahertz of spectrum comprising 28 lots drew bids for 20 lots.
Officials confirmed that the second round of the auction would commence shortly, lasting approximately 30 minutes.
Chairman of the PTA emphasized the critical role of 5G in overcoming internet load-shedding and providing faster, more reliable connectivity. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb highlighted the auction as a milestone for Pakistan’s IT sector, noting government efforts to expand digital infrastructure and make internet services faster and more affordable.
Federal Minister for IT Shaza Fatima Khawaja described the 5G rollout as a transition from 4G to advanced connectivity, asserting that improved internet access would support economic growth and strengthen Pakistan’s digital economy.
