Pakistan Introduces Facial Verification for SIM Issuance to Curb Fraud

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.

It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Despite the implementation of biometric systems in Pakistan, the issuance of illegal mobile SIM cards has not been completely eliminated. In response, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has decided to take a significant step to strengthen its security system.
According to reports, under the new policy, SIM issuance will now require not only fingerprint verification but also facial recognition of the user. The aim of this upgraded system is to counter increasingly sophisticated methods of fraud that have been used to bypass the existing biometric system.
Officials revealed that fraudsters have been using fake silicone fingerprints to obtain SIM cards, while others have managed to issue illegal SIMs by stealing identities of legitimate users.
Sources within PTA stated that the chairman has directed authorities to accelerate the implementation of the facial verification system. The new system is being developed in line with international standards to ensure a more secure and reliable SIM registration process.
Authorities believe that making facial verification mandatory will significantly reduce the misuse of fake fingerprints and prevent unauthorized SIM issuance. This move is expected to establish a more robust and foolproof system, helping to curb illegal activities, including terrorism, fraud, and other crimes.
