Pakistan PM Shahbaz Sharif Reviews Cashless Economy Progress

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.

It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Islamabad: Prime Minister Mohammad Shahbaz Sharif chaired a high-level review meeting on promoting a cashless economy, emphasizing timely implementation of digital payment systems across federal and provincial governments.

The meeting highlighted the successful transfer of salaries, pensions, and vendor payments to the RAAST Digital Payment System, with economic teams and the State Bank of Pakistan praising the initiative. Between July 2025 and January 2026, payments exceeding PKR 1.6 trillion were processed through RAAST, reflecting a significant step towards a digital economy.

Under the Ramadan Relief Package, 71% of eligible beneficiaries have received aid, a sharp improvement from last year’s 24%, attributed to the Prime Minister’s special directives for timely disbursement. Officials reported that the number of digital banking users has now surpassed 127 million.

Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif instructed all government departments to provide QR codes on bills, ensuring easier access to services for citizens. A detailed dashboard briefing showcased the digital payment ecosystem’s progress, while officials outlined ongoing measures to meet targets within set timelines.

The meeting was attended by federal ministers, provincial chief secretaries, governors, and senior officials from relevant departments, including BISP and the Ministry of IT.
