PM Shahbaz Sharif Decision against Pakistan-India T20 World Cup Match
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) — Pakistan has approved participation in a highly anticipated match against India during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, scheduled for Feb. 15, following government authorization, officials said.
The decision was endorsed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif after consultations with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and international cricket stakeholders. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi briefed the premier on high-level discussions involving the International Cricket Council (ICC), Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), and other relevant parties.
Government officials said the approval considered diplomatic, sporting, and regional factors. Authorities also reviewed a formal request from Bangladesh’s cricket board urging Pakistan to help ensure continuity in global cricket competitions.
Officials noted that Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates, and other countries also encouraged Pakistan to play the match, emphasizing its importance for maintaining stability in international cricket. The government described Bangladesh as a “brotherly nation” and reaffirmed support for regional cricket development.
In its statement, the government said Pakistan’s participation aims to preserve the spirit of sportsmanship and uphold the continuity of global cricket tournaments. The Prime Minister and the public extended best wishes to Pakistan’s national team, known as the “Men in Green.”
The BCB thanked Pakistan for demonstrating sportsmanship under challenging circumstances, highlighting the financial and competitive significance of a Pakistan-India match.
