Progress made on smartphone installment plan in Pakistan

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.

It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Significant progress has been made on Pakistan’s initiative to provide smartphones on easy installment plans. The Ministry of IT, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), and telecom operators have completed consultations and agreed to develop a comprehensive framework for the program.

According to reports, the Ministry of IT has already prepared a policy directive to formalize the plan. The initiative, originally introduced in November 2022 under the “Smartphone for All” program, aims to improve digital access across the country by making smartphones more affordable.

Telecom companies had earlier raised concerns regarding financial risks and legal complications. To address these issues, it has been proposed that if a user fails to pay installments, their mobile SIM registered against their national ID could be suspended. Additionally, the PTA would have the authority to block the smartphone.

However, the government rejected a proposal to completely freeze defaulters’ financial services, stating that such authority lies with the State Bank of Pakistan.

Officials also revealed that telecom operators, including Chinese companies, have begun contacting mobile manufacturers to ensure a steady supply of devices.

Once the policy directive is officially issued, the program is expected to be implemented nationwide, enabling consumers to purchase smartphones through convenient installment plans.
