ISLAMABAD: The Punjab Government has acquired a 2019 model business jet valued at an estimated $38, 42 million for official use triggering debate over public spending as Pakistan faces economic challenges.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz confirmed the purchase in a statement on X saying the province would no longer need to rely on federal authorities or the Pakistan Air Force for air transport. The aircraft manufactured by Gulfstream Aerospace was recently seen at Allama Iqbal International Airport.

According to manufacturer specifications, the GVII G500 jet has a range of roughly 5,300 nautical miles and can accommodate up to 19 passengers. Officials describe the plane as a modern replacement for aging aircraft previously used for official travel.

The timing of the acquisition has drawn criticism from opposition voices. Former Sindh governor Mohammad Zubair questioned the expenditure citing economic pressures inflation and poverty concerns.

Supporters argue the jet will improve efficiency and reduce dependency on federal resources. However provincial authorities have yet to release details on financing procurement procedures, or operational plans.

The purchase comes as Pakistan continues its economic stabilisation programme with the International Monetary Fund.
