The Government of Punjab has decided to construct 17 new mini dams across the province as part of a comprehensive strategy to manage future floods and heavy rainfall. The decision was made during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to review post-flood management preparations.
During the briefing officials informed the meeting that rainfall this year is expected to be up to 28 percent higher than normal, raising concerns about potential flooding in vulnerable areas. To address the situation, the provincial government has set a three month deadline to clear waterways and natural drainage channels to ensure smooth water flow during the upcoming monsoon season.
The meeting also approved a proposal to build mini dams at 17 different locations in Punjab, while a separate project for constructing a dam in Chiniot received formal approval.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz emphasized that construction within riverbeds will be permanently banned to prevent obstruction of natural water flow. She also directed authorities to introduce Inflatable Dam Technology, a modern system that allows better water management and storage.
In addition, the government decided to increase water storage capacity at Kalabagh and Sadhnai, restructure the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), and establish eight new operational wings to strengthen disaster response.
The Chief Minister also approved the establishment of District Emergency Operation Centers, regional disaster warehouses, and the provision of modern equipment to Rescue 1122 for improved flood response operations.
