Lahore: The Punjab government has reportedly purchased a new aircraft for Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, with the jet said to be worth approximately Rs10 billion. According to sources, the aircraft is a Gulfstream G500 bearing registration number N144S. The jet has previously traveled to Pakistan but is currently registered in the United States and has not yet been formally registered locally.
Officials say the purchase is linked to the broader launch plan of Air Punjab, the provincial airline expected to begin operations in April. In the first phase, the government plans to acquire seven aircraft as part of its strategy to develop a provincial aviation fleet. Some planes will be purchased outright, while others may be obtained through leasing arrangements.
The development has drawn criticism on social media, with users questioning the use of public funds for what they describe as a luxury asset during challenging economic times. Critics argue that government spending should prioritize public welfare projects.
Punjab Information Minister Uzma Bukhari defended the move, stating that the aircraft acquisition is part of a larger fleet development plan. She added that further details would be shared once all arrangements are finalized.
