Russia’s Foreign Ministry of Russia on Tuesday warned of the risk of a direct military confrontation between nuclear powers and the severe consequences such a clash could bring.
The statement followed claims by Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) accusing United Kingdom and France of allegedly preparing to secretly supply Ukraine with nuclear weapons parts and technology. No documentary evidence was provided by the SVR to support the allegations. The French embassy in Moscow dismissed the claim as an outright lie and Britain has yet to comment.
Russian President Vladimir Putin told the FSB security service that adversaries likely understood the potential consequences of any nuclear-involved attack on Russia or its forces. Russia updated its nuclear doctrine in 2024 outlining defensive scenarios and emphasizing nuclear weapons as a deterrent.
Ukraine rejected the claims as absurd. Heorhii Tykhyi urged the international community to dismiss Moscow’s dirty information bombs and reiterated that Ukraine has repeatedly denied any pursuit of nuclear weapons with Western assistance.
