The Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued a warning of possible road closures and landslides in northern and mountainous areas due to heavy snowfall expected from January twenty six to January twenty seven. Citizens and tourists have been advised to remain extremely cautious and avoid unnecessary travel during this period.
According to the advisory snowfall is likely to affect several hilly and tourist regions including Naran and Kaghan as well as Dir and Swat. Other areas under risk include Kalam Chitral Kohistan Mansehra Abbottabad Shangla Astore Hunza Skardu Murree Galliyat Neelum Valley Bagh and Poonch. Parts of Balochistan such as Quetta Ziarat Chaman and Zhob are also expected to be impacted.
The department warned of possible landslides and avalanches in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Gilgit Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Heavy snow accumulation could block roads disrupt travel and delay emergency services.
Severe winter conditions have already affected several regions where avalanches and snowfall have stranded travelers and damaged infrastructure. Recently a tragic avalanche in Chitral claimed the lives of nine members of a family.
The PMD said a western weather system will enter southwestern Balochistan before moving to upper regions. Cold and dry weather is expected in most areas while northern regions will remain extremely cold with snowfall and strong winds.
