ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has scheduled hearings for criminal petitions related to the Toshakhana case against Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) founder and former prime minister Imran Khan.
Following the completion of proceedings at the Islamabad High Court the case has been fixed for hearing before the Supreme Court on February 9. A two member bench headed by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi and comprising Justice Shahid Bilal Hassan will hear the petitions.
Imran Khan was earlier sentenced to three years in prison by a trial court under Sections 167 and 173 of the Election Act. However the Islamabad High Court later suspended the sentence providing temporary relief to the former premier.
The petitions before the Supreme Court challenge the legality of the trial court proceedings. The applicants argue that the trial court ignored the remand order issued by the Islamabad High Court and failed to follow its directions. It has been contended that the trial court exceeded its legal authority by delivering a verdict after the high court’s order and the proceedings should therefore be declared unlawful.
The Supreme Court had earlier deferred hearings on the matter in August 2023 while the plea for suspension of sentence was pending before the Islamabad High Court.
