WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday posted screenshots of what he said were messages from French President Emmanuel Macron, suggesting Macron offered to host a Group of Seven meeting in Paris following tensions over Trump’s remarks on Greenland.
If authentic, the messages indicate Macron proposed holding a G7 meeting Thursday afternoon after the World Economic Forum in Davos and invited Trump to dinner in Paris the same day. In one screenshot, Macron appeared puzzled by Trump’s comments on Greenland, writing that he did not understand the U.S. president’s position.
The messages also suggested Macron was considering inviting Ukraine, Denmark, Syria and Russia to hold discussions on the sidelines of the proposed meeting.
Trump did not release any responses he may have sent. The White House and the French presidency did not immediately comment, though a confidant of Macron confirmed the message shared by Trump was genuine.
The disclosure comes as tensions rise between Washington and European allies over Trump’s renewed demand for the United States to purchase Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark. Trump has announced additional tariffs on imports from several European countries, linking the measures to Greenland-related negotiations.
European leaders are expected to address the issue at an emergency European Union summit in Brussels on Thursday, as concerns grow over the impact on trans-Atlantic relations.
