The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is preparing to join the United States and its allies in a potential military effort to reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz following recent Iranian attacks. According to The Wall Street Journal the UAE is actively lobbying at the United Nations Security Council for a resolution that would authorize such action.
Emirati diplomats have urged the US along with European and Asian military powers, to form a joint coalition capable of ensuring safe passage through the waterway. A UAE official stated that the country has assessed its capabilities including mine-clearing operations and logistical support, to assist in securing the strait.
The report also revealed that the UAE has suggested the US consider seizing key islands in the strait, including Abu Musa, which has been under Iranian control for decades but is also claimed by the UAE.
Meanwhile Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states are reportedly taking a tougher stance against Iran, favoring continued military pressure. Bahrain is said to be drafting the UN resolution with a vote expected soon.
This marks a major shift in the UAE’s strategy, moving from mediation efforts to a more assertive regional role.
